Charley S. Baker was born October 2, 1885, north of Avalon near Onion Creek, Ellis County, Texas, and lived in the Avalon community all his life.

His grandparents, T.M. and Sallyan Baker, and children came to Onion Creek by covered wagon from Echols, Kentucky, in 1881.

In 1884, Orlando Cortez Baker married Miss Betty Elizabeth Tapp, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John Tapp, originally of Stewart's Mill Georgia. O.C. Baker died when his infant son, Charley, was 11 months old.

Charley attended public school less than three years. He was seven years of age in 1892, when he began school at Maloney, Texas. Charley was taken out of school to cut sprouts and that was the end of his formal schooling. His grandmother, Sallyan, was a school teacher in Kentucky and she helped him some. His limited schooling served as a challenge to him through the years. His knowledge of law and math is unbelievable.

He was a Methodist and was baptized by Rev. Johnson at Nash when he was nine years old.

July 1, 1907, Charley and Miss Hattie E. Stone were united in marriage. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.A. Stone of Avalon, formerly of Jackscreek, Tennessee.

C.S. and Hattie Baker moved to his farm on Onion Creek. The couple reared six children, four girls and two boys. Hattie Baker died on Jan. 8, 1954.

A native of the Avalon community, Charley Baker, lived through many changing eras, from clearing timber to farm the land to moduled cotton. At one time he developed his own cotton seed that would yield a longer staple cotton in the area, which gave him a premium price for his cotton.

He entered the Convalescent Home in Italy, on March 8, 1972. Charley S. Baker died on June 22, 1981.
