W.H. CALDWELL, PIONEER, DIES
Born Here Before City Was Founded
William H. Caldwell, 70, who was born on the site of Parsons before the town was founded and later worked as a Katy car record clerk, died at 12:10 o'clock this morning at the Katy Employees hospital. He had been in failing health several years and had been bedfast three months.
Mr. Caldwell was born here June 10, 1870, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Caldwell who were among the earliest settlers of this county. It was not until the next winter that the town of Parsons was found. He had lived all his life here except for intervals when his work took him away.
He began working for the Katy when he was a boy, later securing a position as locomotive fireman. After working in that capacity several years he was transferred to the car department, where he had worked up to chief car record clerk, when his health forced him to retire in 1929.
Mr. Caldwell married Miss Mamie Ellsworth of Denison, Tex., May 15, 1899 in that city. They mad their home there for a short time before being transferred back to Parsons.
An ardent sportsman, he was especially fond of hunting and fishing. He was a charter member of the Parsons Rod and Gun club and for several years served as its president. He was also a charter member of the local Brotherhood of Railroad carmen.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Mamie Caldwell, three sons, Leslie, Orville and Leonard; two daughters, Mrs. Lola Wyler and Miss Marie Caldwell, and four grandchildren, all of whom live in Parsons. He also is survived by two sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the Rude funeral home, with the Rev. Frank E. Ryerson officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
The body will lie in state at the funeral home until the funeral hour.
