J. M. is found in the Masonic Grand Lodge of Mississippi records as early as 1857 as a Master Mason. The Masonic Grand Lodge of Texas records show the various lodges he was a member of along with some of the offices he held. He was a life long Mason.
James was a Civil War veteran enlisting March 9, 1863 and serving until the end of the war. He was a Private with Company E, 12th Battalion of the 10th Mississippi Cavalry.

J.M. Lindsey lived in Mississippi where he married his first wife, Miss Tabitha Mackey. To this union was born five sons and six girls; three sons and two daughters survive - G.W. Lindsey, Dr. L.A. Lindsey, J.R. Lindsey, Mrs. Addie Aiken, and Mrs. Alma Blain. Their mother died in 1883. The family moved to Texas some years before her death. In February 1885, he married Miss Kate Beaver in Kaufman County, Texas who survives him. To this union was born one daughter - Miss Vattie Lindsey, who is a teacher at Bellevue. He was converted in 1840, joining the Missionary Baptist Church a few years later. He moved to Bellevue in December 1893, dying at his home here on Tuesday. Services were held in the Bellevue Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Walter Melton of Waco, assisted by the pastor, Rev. Powell.
