Doris Hazel Innis, 99, entered into perpetual light on Saturday, April 29, 2023. She was born on the evening of January 11, 1924, in a rural farm house located in "Mud Creek Bottom" Cherokee County, Texas, near Jacksonville. Writing of the event herself, she said, "Once upon a time, when the weather was snowing hard in the dead of winter, there she came! Dr. J.M. Travis and her dad were in attendance. There was a roaring fire in the fireplace as in those days there was no electricity in the country. The coal oil lamps were shining bright and, with the doctor's help, she popped out into the world."

Hazel was welcomed into the world by parents John Harmon Causey and his wife Carrie Ellen (Packer) Causey, in addition to her older siblings Woodrow Causey , Fred Causey, Dorothy (Causey) Nall, and Lillie Mae (Causey) Gray. Before their oldest, John and Carrie had 3 previous children who passed through this world too early: John, aged 5, and twins Esther and Lester, two months. After Hazel's birth three more siblings would be born into the family: twins Geraldine and Josephine, and Ida Grace. Eleven siblings were born into the Causey family in total. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, three older brothers and four older sisters.

Hazel married orthopedic surgeon Dr. Emart Renshaw Innis in 1952. Dr. E. R. Innis practiced in Ft. Worth, Texas. They had two beautiful children, Cynthia Lynn (Innis) Farrell, and Joseph Emart Innis. Dr. Emart Renshaw Innis passed in 1965.

Surviving to cherish Hazel's memory are daughter Cynthia Lynn Farrell and son Joseph Emart Innis, as well as three grandchildren who were the love of her life: Cameron Joseph Farrell, Carrie Ellen Farrell, and Collin Anthony Farrell. Hazel is also blessed with the love of many nieces and nephews.

As a young woman Hazel followed her dream of becoming a nurse at the University of Houston where she received an Associate's Degree in Nursing. Her journey then took her all the way to Seattle, Washington where she received certification to be an administrator and to teach operating room techniques. Thirty-eight years later she attended Tyler Junior College to study Personnel Management, but her crowning accomplishment was when she later graduated with a BS in nursing from The University of Texas in Tyler. All of this study and hard work allowed Hazel to do what she truly loved, helping others.

In addition to working in the Operating Room, she worked in ICU, the Emergency Room, was an OR Tech Instructor, and the Director of Nurses. Over the years Hazel worked at Medical Center Hospital, Glenwood Hospital, UTT Health Science Center and Community Hospital.

Leaving the hospital setting, she worked in Public Health and in Industrial Nursing. Hazel served in several medical organizations and received scholarships and awards along the way. She taught seminars throughout the United States, helping younger nurses follow in her footsteps.

In her rare spare time Hazel enjoyed travel, fishing, painting, knitting, reading, cooking (especially Christmas candy), and listening to classical, big band and jazz music. Hazel enjoyed playing Mahjong and Forty-Two with her wonderful neighbors in the Homestead Townhouse community. She was a social butterfly, and took great care of those around her.

Being a member of the Episcopal Church brought endless joy to Hazel's life. She attended St. Francis Episcopal Church and Christ Church - Episcopal of Tyler where she was a member of the Guild of the Nativity and served on the altar guild, knitted prayer shawls and made tea towels. Her church family was very special to Hazel. Hazel will be greatly missed, and well remembered, by all those who knew and loved her.

A visitation will be held Monday, May 8, 2023 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Lloyd James Funeral Home located at 1011 E. 1st St. in Tyler, Texas. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 9, 2023 at 1p.m. at Christ Church - Episcopal located at 118 South Bois d' Arc. Memorial donations may be made to Christ Church - Episcopal or to a charity of your choice.
