Thomas Jefferson Payne was born at Lewis, Vigo County, Indiana, June 22, 1832. He was united in marriage with Adeline Teel Jewell, October 30, 1851. To this union were born ten children, two of whom died in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Bumgardner died December 4, 1907. Those surviving are Mrs. Martha Richey, Eureka, Kansas; Mrs. Nancy Stark, Burdett, Colo; Frank Payne, Bonners Ferry, Idaho; Riley Payne, Howard, Kas.; Mrs. Jennie Forster, Vermillion, Ills.;Harry T. Payne, Newport, Indiana, and Felix Payne, Clovis, New Mexico.

At the age of thirty he united with the Christian Church and has since been a faithful member and consistent worker.

In 1879 with his family he moved to Edgar county, Illinois. In 1911 he moved to Howard, Kansas, where he lived with his son, Riley Payne, until his death.

He enlisted at the call of his country August 13, 1862, and served almost three years in the Union Army. He was in twenty-three of the notable battles and was with Sherman on his march to the sea. He was honorably discharged June 12, 1865. He was a faithful member of the G.A.R. and served as Post Commander several terms.

He departed this life June 5, 1918, at the age of 85 years,11 months and 17 days. His wife preceded him to the better world Sept. 2, 1875.

Funeral services were held at the home on Saturday at 11 o'clock conducted by Rev. Arthur pastor of the Christian Church of Howard. The beautiful service of the G.A.R. was performed at the grave. The interment was in Grace Lawn cemetery.
