Richard is the son of Joseph B Holderby and Martha Stubblefield. He was born in Virginia and by 1850 was living in the Eastern District of Rockingham county, NC.

Richard is a brother to A M, Marcus, Sarah, James P, Mary S, Frances R, S Lucy A, William J, Robert B and Frannie B Holderby.

On 31 Oct 1854 Richard married Virgina "Jennie" Mills and they are the parents of Walter L, Richard Mills, James C, Salle Elizabeth "Betty", Maud Holderby Deal, William J, Frances "Fannie" and Samuel H Holderby.

On 7 May 1862, Richard enlisted in Company H, NC 45th infantry. He mustered out in June of 1865 and the family lived in Oregonville, Rockingham county where he worked as a tobacconist. He was admitted to the asylum before the turn of the century already in his 60s.

His daughter, Mary Maud, would also die while in care at a state hospital, in Williamsburg, VA, she after a fall on a sidewalk after she'd been in care there a little over three years.
