On 20 Apr 1861 Thomas enlisted in Co C, NC 1st infantry and mustered out on 12 Nov of that year, having served the Confederacy.
In November of 1866 he married Mary Ann Adams, who was ten years younger than he and they became the parents of Cora Agnes Harkey Spivey and Joseph Mathias Harkey.
Thomas initially supported his family as a housepainter. Family records indicate that by 1879 he had signed both Joseph and Cora over as indentured servants.
Thomas was admitted to the asylum, probably in the 1890s given the number on his marker, 1221 and he died soon thereafter.
