Avis' maiden name is listed as Kruger which she took from her stepfather Charles H. Kruger. Her biological father was Rollie Franklin Roy who apparently divorced Avis mother Adah when Avis was a young girl.

Schmidlapp, sister of the late Vivian Pilcher, grandmother of Gene, Jr (Sue) and Scott (Andi) Mapes, Jessica (the late Kris Basala) Schmidlapp and Jay (Angie) Schmidlapp, great-grandmother of Virginia, Kathryn, Anne, and Elisabeth Mapes, Charlotte Basala, Maria Schmidlapp, Mackenzie, Madison and McGuire Saffin. Sunday, September 25, 2011. A Memorial Service will be held in December. Memorials may be directed to St. Margaret Hall, Hospice of Cincinnati or to the Zoological Society of Cincinnati. Elden A.
