Ernest C. VanHall, Jr., 55, formerly of Northampton, decorated veteran of World War II, died Saturday at Pittsfield Hospital, Pittsfield. He was the husband of Frances (Colby) Geoffrion VanHall.
He was born Dec. 7, 1919, in Mancester, N.H., the son of Ernest C. VanHall and Beatrice (Bennet) VanHall. He moved to Turners Falls at an early age and received his education there graduating from Turners Falls High School and from Susquehanna University in Selinsgrove, PA. A World War II veteran, he had served overseas in the Mediterranian theater with the US Army Air Force and had completed over 50 combat missions, subsequently being decorated with the Purple Heart and the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster. For many years he had been employed at Yankee Hill Machine Company in Bay State.
Besides his wife, Mr. VanHall is survived by five stepsons, Howard, Norman, Leroy, Francis, and Thomas Geoffrion, all of Northampton; one brother Warren VanHall of Savannah, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Johnston of Hatfield, Mrs. Eliose Clark of Shirley, and many nieces and nephews.
Private funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at the Edmund B. Mitchell & Son Funeral Home. The Rev. Frederick V. Hanley, Chaplin at the Leeds Veterans Administration Hospital, will officiate. Burial will be at East Street Cemetery, Easthampton. There will be no calling hours.
