According to Union county records he participated in the battle at Sharpsburg and was wounded there. Legend says he was wounded in his right arm and the right thigh at a place called Wilderness sometime around May 5-6, 1864. He was later wounded in the chest in battle at Gaines' Mill, Virginia, June 11, 1864.
General married Mary Jane Starnes on 11 Sep 1859. They are the parents of Leander, Thomas, Sarah and Burrell Griffin. He supported his family by farming.
General was admitted to the asylum soon after it opened in the Spring of 1883. His marker indicates that he was the 174th person admitted to the new facility so it is likely he was admitted in late 1883. Date of death provided by descendant.
