Taps Sounded for Estacada's Last G. A. R. Man
ESTACADA, July 14 (Special)--Taps were sounded last night for Edwin Bates, 92, the only surviving representative of the Grand Army of the Republic of Estacada, who died at his home here.
Mr. Bates, who was born January 1, 1843, in Fairfield county, near Stamford, Conn., was 18 years old when the civil war broke out. He enlisted in 1862 and remained in the army until the close of the war. In 1866 he married Sarah E. Millard and went to live on a farm in Knox county, Missouri. In 1871 they moved to Portland. The Bates family took up a homestead on the Mount Hood loop and later lived on a farm in lower Garfield. They moved to Estacada in 1895, where Mr. Bates resided till the time of his death.
Mr. Bates was active in public life. He had been master of granges and served two years as master of the Clackamas county Pomona grange. He was justice of the peace at Estacada for some time and served as deputy sheriff on various occassions. This year the Estacada Odd Fellows lodge, of which organization he was charter member, honored him with election to the office of vice-grand.
Survivors are one son, Fred W. Bates of Estacada, and one daughter, Mrs. Maude Howell of Ashton, Or., and a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Mollie Bates of Estacada.
Funeral sevices will be held in Estacada Monday at 2 P. M., Rev. P. Crowle U'Renn officiating. Services at the grave side will be in charge of the Estacada Odd Fellows lodge and the Estacada American Legion post.
