Mr. Beattie worked as a mason prior to his service with Co H, NC 49th infantry regiment during the civil war. He also served as a mason in the war. He enlisted 21 Apr 1862 and mustered out 10 Mar 1863.

He married Mary Frances Burns and they had a daughter in 1860, unnamed at the time of the census that year. He has not been found yet in the 1870 census.

Mr. Beattie was the 85th person admitted to the new Western NC asylum and it is likely he transferred there from the NC asylum in Raleigh.
