H.S. Crumpler, 42, Buried Saturday In St. Luke's Cemetery
Funeral services for Howard Swanson Crumpler, 42, who died January 20th in a Richmond hospital after a long illness were held Saturday afternoon at the graveside in St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery, Benns Church, with the Rev. O. L. Gilliam officiating assisted by the Rev. Victor Anthony 3rd. He was the son of Mrs. Jenella Gould Crumpler of Isle of Wight County and the late Joseph S. Crumpler. A native of Southampton County he had lived most of his life in Isle of Wight County He was a member of the Black Creek Baptist Church and a prosperous farmer until four years ago when he became ill. Besides his mother he is survived by his wife Mrs. Mary Ward Crumpler of Carrollton; a daughter, Miss Mary Virginia Crumpler of Smithfield and a son of Carrollton; three sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Pleasants and Miss Olgie Lee Crumpler of Smithfield and Mrs. Arthur Hall of Beverley Hills, West Virginia; three brothers. O. G., James S. and Joseph S. Crumpler, all of Smithfield. The body was taken to the Bullock Funeral Home where it remained until 12:45 P. M. at which time the funeral procession left for St. Luke's Memorial Cemetery for services at 1 P. M. A. B. Gilliam, Q. B. Gilliam, Dana Combs, Ray Lowe, Edward W. Sowards and Lawrence Sowards were active pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were friends of the family.
