"James McConnell, m. 12 mo. 31, 1863, Catharine M. Cowles. James McConnell was a successful farmer in Maryland on the farm bought by his father, when he was ten years old. He moved west in 1853, and bought a dry goods store in Salem, Ohio."

From: Early Maltby, by Ella K. Barnard, page 298, available from Internet Archive.

In the 1850 U.S. Census for Harford Co., Maryland, the children of James and Anna are Sarah C. (16), James W. (10), Francis L. (10), Samuel (8) and James C. (3). The last is likely an error and should be Isaiah.

In the 1860 U.S. Census for Salem, Ohio, the children of James and Anna are, James W. (19), Samuel (18) and Isaiah C. (12).

In the 1870 U.S. Census for Burlington, Iowa, he is with his wife Margaret (45) and son Isaiah (22).

The Early Maltby book gives his parents as Samuel McConnell and Frances Malsby. Middle name Orr is from elsewhere in the Early Maltby book and is confirmed by Quaker Meeting Records.

His will named the following children, Sallie C. Price, Francis L. Eastman, Samuel R. McConnell, and Isaiah C. McConnell, and son-in-laws William Eastman and E. H. Price. His widow Maggie contested the will.

In Burlington he ran a leather goods and saddle company along with his surviving sons.
