John Sunday II was born in Georgia circa 1821. He witnessed the murder of his father. According to his 1860 US Census records he was a farmer/laborer, owned no real estate and the value of his estate was $200. He died at Camp Leon in Leon County, Florida, on June 19, 1862, of a fever he contracted while serving in the Confederate Army. He had enlisted in Tallahassee on April 28 that same year, as a private in Captain William Bloxham's Company C of the 5th Regiment of Florida Volunteers, but had also provided certain repair services to army wagons prior to that time. John was a planter by profession, 5'10" tall and had blue eyes, a light complexion and light-colored hair.

John's widow, Martha Jane Atkinson, received $43.70 following his death in recompense for unpaid salary and clothing. His children with Martha were James, Frances Virginia and Louisa Bathsheba. According to Kathleen Marsh, a descendant of John and Martha, John was previously married to "Rebecca" and his first three children, Thomas, Nancy and Benjamin were issue of that union.
