Abner Galpin enlisted as a Private in Company K of the Twenty-Fourth Michigan Infantry on August 2, 1862, for 3 years of service, at age 18. He was discharged for disability on January 1, 1864, at Culpepper, Virginia.

Reenlisted in Company D of the Reorganized Fourth Michigan Infantry on September 17, 1864, for 3 years, at age 20. Died of typhoid at Cumberland Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee.
