Carroll J. Oien, longtime resident of Bloomington, Illinois passed away at his home in Largo, Florida.

Carroll graduated from Aitkin High School in 1946 and from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota in 1950. He served in the Korean War, after which he and his wife settled in Bloomington, where he was employed by State Farm for 33 years. He received a master's degree from Illinois State University in 1971.

Carroll was an active volunteer in many local organizations, co-founding Habitat for Humanity of McLean County in 1985, which became a major part of his life until his death. He joined Jimmy Carter work weeks every summer, building Habitat homes in cities across the country. At age 66 he and Pat bicycled 530 miles to raise money for Habitat and help build homes in Eagle Butte, S.D., alongside the Carters and Tom Brokaw. In 1998, he received the Martin Luther King award from a local organization recognizing his outstanding human relations contributions. Carroll was also a volunteer tutor at a Bloomington grade school for many years. Carroll was an outstanding musician having studied trumpet, piano and organ at a young age. He was the leader of the Carleton swing band for four years playing trumpet and was the choir director and organist at a Bloomington church for many years.
