Nana Sloan, as all we great-grandchildren called her loved flowers and gardening. She also did stitchery, primarily crocheted doilies and table-top pieces. She also imprinted designs on sheets and pillowcases and embroidered. She was multitalented. Her hubby died a short 3 years after I was born so I do not remember him at all. I was told by Nana, her younger daughter that he loved my baby curls and loved to hold me. When I was a kid, I remember she and Auntie Vi, Nana's older sister, lived together in a duplex across the street or only a block away from a small drug store. Compared to Nana and Auntie Vi, I considered Nana Sloan quite tall.

In all instances, except that of her christening or baptism, where she was christened Abigail Amanda Erway, she used the name Abbalene Amanda followed by her married surname. Perhaps it was because her father-in-law's mother's name was Abigail Jane (Phillips).

She was the eldest of 8 children born to Mark Reed Erway and Marie Eleanor Smith Dailey. Marie never got the opportunity to know her father as he died 1 week before she was born around or at Hangtown, El Dorado County, California. He was coming home from market where he had sold cattle, was robbed, and killed. Abbie was raised Catholic as I remember Nana Sloan Catholic Bible. Her parents were married 3 November 1880 in Carson City, Ormsby County, Nevada by Father Tourmey.

Nana Sloan was married 3 times.
1) She and Joseph Henry Polglase, son of Joseph Bailey Polglase and Selina Penglase, were married 29 November 1899 at Yerrington, Lyon County, Nevada. They had 3 children born to marriage: Violet Polglase, who married Oliver Victor and had 1 child, Marshall Victor; Wilbert Polglase married Jennie Olsen (I loved the accent as she'd been born in Sweden or Norway; and Lillian LaVerne Polglase married Cornelius Isaac Van Nest 21 April 1927 in Santa Ana, Orange Co, CA. With that marriage she gained 2 sons from Neal's 1st marriage to Thelma. To their marriage were born 2 children - Violet LaVern Van Nest and Lester Mark Van Nest. Nana or Lillian also had a miscarriage and was told as a teenager the baby or membranes were buried under the back porch by Grandpa. When researching in Virginia City area in the 1970s, I ran across a document where Nana Sloan had filed for a divorce from Joseph Henry; it was subsequently withdrawn because of an accident in which he died.
2) She then married a Mr. Paul (perhaps Ed), but either got an annulment or divorce shortly afterwards as he wanted to send the children away to go to school.
3) She married her soulmate and true love when she met Arthur John Sloan, whom she married 30 April 1917 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. One son, Carlton Darren was born to this union. He died 27 May 1951 in Los Angeles County, CA and was buried 31 May 1951 Olive Plat, Grave # 75, Inglewood Park Cemetery.

One of the last articles featuring he and his theatrical career pictured he with a large fluffy cat and living in Sun City.
5)Laurene L. born 14 Mar 1894 in Yerington, Lyon Co, NV. She first married Amos Slippy then a Mr. Walsh

She was married twice, 1st to Theodore Kyler Edson 5 Aug 1921 and in later years and long after his death to ? Alexander. (Note: I stayed with them a few times when I was doing research in that area and marveled at her hubby being able to do so much when he did not have full use of one of his arms.
