Descendant of John Lewis

She was a descendant of John Lewis of Ireland and his wife Margaret Lynn, who settled in the Shenadoah Valley about 1732 through their daughter, Margaret Lewis, who married William Long.

She was the daughter of Hardin W. Long and Henrietta Braden Long.
On April 13, 1912 as Sarah Paralee Long, she married M.M. Cunningham at Lamar County, Texas.
In December 1941, she married James M. Burks.

Paris News Service. Honey Grove. Mrs. J.M. Burks, 74, died here Tuesday at 5:15PM in the Page Nursing Home, where she had been since suffering a stoke 18 months ago.

The former Miss Sarah Paralee Long, daughter of Hardy and Henrietta (Adams) Long, she was born September 15, 1886 in Tigertown community. She was married to J.M. Cunningham in 1912, his death occurring in 1929; later she was married to J.M. Burks who died in 1959.

The funeral, Thursday at 2:30PM will be held here at Main Street Presbyterian Church where she was a member, the pastor, the Rev. Sam Rice, and the Rev. T.J. Watts of First Baptist church, officiating. Nephews will be bearers, Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home to make interment in Oakwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Burks leaves these children by her first marriage: Harvey Cunningham, Portland, Oregon; James Cunningham and Leroy Cunningham, Madill, Oklahoma; Mrs. Glenn Fennell and Mrs. Jimmy Paschal, Honey Grove; 20 other descendants; these stepdaughters; Mrs. Ernest Bankhead, Mrs. George Dibley and Mrs. Will Kirk, all of Honey Grove; and these sisters: Mrs. DeWitt Simmons, Honey Grove; Mrs. Sam Seay and Mrs. Ed Burks, Paris; Mrs. Sam Wood, Tigertown, and Mrs. Rosie Hodnett, in West Texas.

Honey Grove (Special.) Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Parlee Burks, 74, will be held in the Main Street Presbyterian Church at 2:30PM Thursday. Mrs. Burks died in a Honey Grove rest home, Tuesday, April 18, 1961, following an illness of more than two years.

The Rev. Samuel Rice, minister of the church and the Rev. T.J. Watts, pastor of the First Baptist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery with Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home directing.

Survivors are three sons, Harry Cunningham of Port Oxford, Oregon, James and Leroy Cunningham of Madill, Oklahoma; two daughters, Mrs. Julia Fennell and Mrs. Vera Paschal, both of Honey Grove; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Other survivors are three stepdaughters, Mrs. Ernest Bankhead, Mrs. George Bibley and Mrs. Will Kirk, all of Honey Grove; five sisters, Mrs. DeWitt Simmons of Honey Grove, Mrs. Sam Seay and Mrs. Ed Burks, both of Honey Grove; Mrs. Sam Woods of Tigertown, Mrs. Rosie Hoddett of West.

Her second husband, J.M. Burks preceded her in death in 1959. Mrs. Burks was a member of the Main Street Presbyterian Church in Honey Grove.
