Death of Jared Randall - The death of Jared Randall, Feb' y 26, at Adams, at the age of 93 years and four months, removes one who was a well known character here and whose early associations with the place date back to only a few years after its settlement.

Up to a recent time he was often seen on the street, and with the exception of a partial deafness retained a good deal of physical vigor; but in his old age it was only those who remembered him in the days of his health and strength could know of a life so full of activity, social cheer and alertness as his had been, was drawing to a close.

Jared Randall was born in Shelburne, Mass., Oct 2d, 1809, the son of Jared and Mehetabel Randall. His father lived for a time at Lake George; afterward in Madison county, N. Y. Jared's mother died when he was about a year old, and his father a few years after.

His father of English descent, was a soldier in the war of 1812, was not expected to live when he gave Jared, at the age of six or eight years, to his brother Benjamin Randall, of this place, "Uncle Ben" as Jared always called him. He was a boy brimful of fun and mischief, and many are the anecdotes narrated of him, one of which is that one day, for something he had done which displeased his aunt she sent him out to cut some sprouts for her to use in correcting him; when he returned he had a handful of sprigs from her choice currant bushes, much to her chagrin.

He was in "Uncle Ben's" family until the age of 14 years when he was privileged by law to choose a guardian; he selected Joseph Allen, junior, in whose family he lived for a time and was always regarded as one of the family. His daughter Helen was given a home there after the death of her mother, at the age of three years until married.

Mr. Randall was a carpenter by trade and served his time with Cornelius Taber. He was foreman three years in the wagon and blacksmith shop of John Jay Kellogg at Pulaski.

He was married at the age of 22 years to Miss Eunice Pierce who died in 1844, leaving two sons, George and Henry, and a daughter, Helen. Henry died at the age of 18 and George died about the year 1861.

Mr. Randall lived for four years at Sand Bank, now Altmar, and built the first shingle manufactory in Oswego county. He was in Canada 20 years, part of the time in the distillery business; married about 1861 his second wife, a widow, Mrs. Brayton, of Newboro, Canada, by whom he had one son, George, and three daughters, one of whom, Mina, died at the age of four years; he is survived by a widow and four children.

At Newboro he had an interest in a grist and saw mill which burned and his loss heavy. He was for several years in Kingston, Canada; at one time, perhaps in the sixties, held a good government position there in a bonded warehouse. He was for several years in the distilling business, and was associated with Jerome Allen in running the Wardwell Settlement distillery which burned many years ago; afterward was with him at Sheffield, Mass. For the past 20 years or more years Mr. Randall had made his home in Adams.

He had a large sense of humor, was a steadfast friend and of great kindness of heart. In his early life he was much given to athletic sports and as a wrestler no one here was his equal, and at base ball he was one of the best who stood behind the bat.

He passed peacefully away on Thursday afternoon, at half one o'clock. The funeral was on Saturday at 2 p.m., Rev. R. J. Thompson officiating.
