Third-generation Funeral Director Dies
by Amelia A. Pridemore, Feb. 29, 2008
During more than 70 years of countless families' and friends' darkest hours, Price Calfee Jr. provided comfort. Now, his own family and friends are experiencing loss. Calfee, 89, died Friday at Bowers Hospice House. He was a third-generation funeral director, owning and operating Calfee Funeral Home in Beckley, a firm his grandfather began in 1900. The U.S. Navy veteran of World War II was given the Charles E. Dodd Funeral Director of the Year award by the state Funeral Directors Association last year. Susan Landis, executive director of Beckley Area Foundation, recalled how Calfee set up an endowment in his wife's memory after her death in 1990. Eloise Calfee, his wife of 46 years, was killed in a car accident while they were returning from a beach trip. Calfee sustained a severe leg injury in the accident. Calfee wanted funds from the endowment to be unrestricted. He believed Raleigh County's greates needs would change constantly. "He was very perceptive. Who would know what the greatest needs of the community are next year, 10 years from now or 25 years from now?" Landis said. "That took a leap of faith, for the income to be used to benefit the community in whatever fashion. He really cared deeply for his community." .... In a September 2007 interview with "the Register-Herald," Calfee said he made it a point to never miss a funeral service, coming to work every day for more than 70 years. ...
