Gustav Edward Mittelstedt came at a young age to the USA with his parents, Carl and Ulricka, where the family settled in Wisconsin, and moved to Minnesota. Gustav married Margaret Ray, and they used the surname spelling of Middlestead. Gustave was farming at Prosser, Washington, when he applied for homestead entry on August 20, 1913 for NW36-25-13W4. The 1921 Alberta census finds Gustave and Margaret Middlestead, living near Pibroch, with children:

- Guy, 12
- Ella. 12
- Malloy, 9
- Marila, 9
- Ernest, 7
