Jean Lockhart Berry Gilbert, 83, died Friday, September 20, 2013, at her home in Raton, New Mexico.

Jean was born March 17, 1930, to Andrew and Marion Lockhart. As the second oldest and only girl, she was raised with four brothers in Pennington, and then Maxwell, before moving to Raton. She spent a year at NMSU in Las Cruces, and married Pat Berry on April 12, 1950, at St. Patrick's Church in Raton. They ranched on Johnson Mesa and raised seven children.

After Pat's death in 1988, Jean married Harold Gilbert and moved to Clayton, the area of her upbringing. She and Harold resided there until his death in 2003, when she moved back to Raton.

Jean was a bookkeeper for many years in Raton. She was an active member of the extension clubs in Raton and Clayton, and a member of the Johnson Mesa Church Association. She also was an active member of the Raton Rodeo Association until shortly before her death. Jean was a 4-H leader and Boy Scout leader for many years and enjoyed working with youth and with her hands. She was seldom idle, as she always had sewing, knitting, craft or refnishing project in the works.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Pat Berry; second husband Harold Gilbert; son Donald Berry; grandson Christopher Berry; brother Roy Snead Lockhart; brothers-in-law Kenneth Berry and George Myers; sister-in-law Catherine Berry Atwater and husband Johnny Atwater.

Survivors include sons, Mike Berry and wife Christine of Maxwell. Ed Berry and wife Mariam of Yuma, Colorado, Frank Berry and wife Kathy of Missoula, Montana, and Walter Berry of Bushland, Texas; daughter-in-law Diane Berry of Raton; daughters, Diane Owen and husband Tim of Raton. and Mary Jean Jones and husband Charley of Sunray, Texas;step-daughter Bonnie Donnelly and husband Tim of Grenville; brothers Water Lockhart and wife Patricia of Aztec, Dick Lockhart and wife Phyllis of Cortez, Colorado, and Jim Lockhart and wife Georgina of Albuquerque; brothers-in-law Frank Berry and wife Shirley of Torrington, Wyoming, and Jim Berry of Surprise, Arizona; sisters-in-law Jeannie Myers, Eleanor Krusi and Janet Berry of Raton and JoEllen Berry of Globe, Arizona; 22 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and many dear friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, September 26, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home in Raton. Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be Thursday at 7:00 pm and Mass of the Resurrection will be Friday, September 27, 2013, at 10:00 am at St. Patrick's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with Father John Trambley as thecelebrant. Rite of Christian Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Raton. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Johnson Mesa Church Association, 263 Francis Ave., Raton, NM 87740, or St. Patrick's/St. Joseph's Church, Buena Vista St., Raton, NM 87740, or to the charity of your choice; Arrangements and celebration of love for Jean Lockhart Berry Gilbert are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home of Raton.
