Longtime Anchorage resident Emma Lou Harrel, 74, died Feb. 23 of heart failure at Our Lady of Compassion Care Center, after a long illness. A service was conducted at Muldoon Community Assembly, with the Rev. Leigh Wiles officiating. Burial was at Valley Memorial Park in Palmer.

She was born Jan. 17, 1919, in Cliff, N.M. Mrs. Harrel came to Alaska in April 1967. She lived at Tok Junction from 1967 to 1969 and then in Anchorage until the time of her death. Mrs. Harrel worked for Parker House in Tok from April 1967 to November 1968 and for the Alaska Railroad from 1969 to 1972. She retired in 1975. She was a member of the Robin Street Chapel and enjoyed taking loving care of family and friends who needed special care, members of her family said. "In the early years Emma worked as a nurse and enjoyed caring for people," family members said. "She enjoyed her family and friends. She would stop and go to any one in time of need." Her leisure time was spent in the pursuit of all record-breaking fish that seemed to miss her fishing pole and bait, family members said.

Mrs. Harrel is survived by her husband of 52 years, Johnie of Anchorage; her son, Buddy of Fairbanks; her daughters, Terry Bradbury of Fairbanks, and Sue Harrel and Faye Smith, both of Anchorage; her sister, Sadie Howell of Truth or Consequences, N.M.; her brother, Buddy Amberson of Gatesville, Texas; her aunt, Lola Christensen of Oregon; and 10 grandchildren, 14 great- grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Carl Fleetwood, Buck Hart, Buddy V. Harrel, Paul Langley, Duane Triplet and Greg Willhoit. Arrangements are under the direction of Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
