Obituary:
James Norvell Pitts
Death of Aged Citizen
The subject of this sketch, Jas. Pitts, was born in Mississippi in 1846 December 20 and died at this place, Harmony, December 3, 1923 lacking seventeen days being 77 years of age. He was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Odom about 54 years ago. After several years of married life in Mississippi, they came to Texas. He came through on horseback in November 1877 and the family came the next summer, making the trip in a wagon. The deceased was one of the earliest settlers in this part of the county, there being only two house between here and Nacogdoches at the time. Wild deer, turkeys and other game were plentiful. He was fond of relating incidents of the many hunts that he took in the early days. He was an old Confederate soldier serving with General Lee in the Army of Virginia. He was a member of the Baptist church for about 25 years. He is survived by one brother and a sister living in Mississippi and one sister living in Slidell, LA. He had one son J. J. Pitts by his first wife and one son by his second wife, also 10 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. He was buried at Harmony graveyard, around and near which he had spent a long, useful and active life. Uncle Jim shall be missed very much as he has been a familiar figure at all social gatherings for many years. Funeral services were held by Brother Gerrard of the Baptist Church. He was sick for about 3 weeks and all that the doctors and loving friends and his family could do for him could not relieve him of his last sickness. By A. H. McNeil
