Samuel Wesley Basham, the son of James Dowell Basham and Elizabeth Davis, was born December 22, 1822 in Breckinridge County, Kentucky. Samuel became a minister of the Christian Church, after being converted by the preaching of Barton Stone. At various times he lived in the counties of Breckinridge, Butler, Warren, Edmonson and Grayson in Kentucky.

Samuel's first wife was Sally Davis Young. They were married on July 14, 1842 in Warren County, Kentucky. Sally was born May 01, 1824 and died on 11 Jul 1859. They were the parents of:
