Daughter of Edward V. Prescott and Dorothy C. Mears, she was first married under her birth name, Nancy Jane Prescott, to Clifton (NJ) High School schoolmate Robert William Siroka on January 4, 1958, in Bennettsville, South Carolina. On August 26, 1958, they had a daughter, Elizabeth. Robert and Nancy divorced about six years later.

Nancy later assumed the working name of "Leigh Brown." She was the producer, manager, editor and muse of humorist and author Jean Shepherd, whom she married on March 2, 1977, in Key West, Florida, under the name Nancy Prescott Siroka. At the time of her death, they were living on Sanibel Island in Florida. Her death certificate reads "Nancy Leigh Shepherd."

Leigh Brown is credited as a co-writer -- along with Shepherd and director Bob Clark -- of the screenplay for the iconic 1983 movie "A Christmas Story," in which she makes an uncredited appearance as the "Red Hatted Curly Haired Woman in Line for Santa." She also wrote a novel concerning horse shows, "The Show Gypsies," published in 1975 by Mason/Charter. She had a longtime interest in animal welfare.
