Sandra Atkins Green passed from this earth into the arms of her God on September 17, 2021.

In her 61 years of life here, she moved a great many times due to being an Air Force brat. Growing up, she had ridiculous fun with her two older sisters and baby brother, playing made up games such as Tight Skirts, laughing hysterically at her mother reading The Night The Bed Fell by James Thurber, and tormenting her brother by not revealing what she was eating.

Eventually, she ended up in Kerrville and Harper where she graduated from high school and made her imprint as a journalist for the school paper and a cheerleader with a winning smile and great legs. After graduating, she attended Texas State University for a time before returning home and reconnecting with an old handsome friend, Paul Green, who had recently broken his neck and was not quite the high diver she remembered---he was more. After an epic and whirlwind courtship, they married in a gazebo outside the Kerrville Public Library in what Sandra described as the most beautiful wedding she's ever been to. Paul and Sandra tore up dance floors from Crider's to Gruene Hall to the living room of their homes over the years, and together they made a passionate story marked by hardship, loyalty, and love.

Mom's first ambition in life was to be a mother, and she was. She reared two children, and she went to all their soccer games, band concerts, and graduations with great enthusiasm. She made special after school snacks, taught them the importance of integrity, and kept their homemade art projects.

Sandra graduated from nursing school at Trinity Valley Community College (go Cardinals!) in 1997, an accomplishment she and her family were so proud she achieved. That year she moved to Kingsland, Texas, where she made a home for the rest of her life. Sandra was an incredible nurse, just like her mom, and she worked at clinics and nursing homes throughout the area. She loved her job and loved her patients and their families. Sandra adored reading, re-watching Lonesome Dove and Gone With The Wind, and beating everyone who dared play along at Jeopardy!

Sandra is preceded in death by her much beloved Granddad and Grandma Welch, Grandma Howard and Granddad Atkins, parents Ted and Nell Atkins, sister Sharon Bradt, and niece Laura Cardella. She is survived by her husband Paul; son Zack Green and grandchildren Cailyn, Camilynn, and Lillian; daughter Leila Green Little, son-in-law Robert Little, and grandchildren Ike and Bess; sister Diana Beard and brother-in-law David Beard; brother Mark Atkins and sister-in-law Peggy Atkins; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Valerie and Carl Stevens; sister-in-law Anita Cypert; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Rodney and Alice Green; and beloved aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted family like her best friend Carla Gentry.

In lieu of flowers or donations, the family suggests the following activities to be performed in her honor:

• make a proper batch of Texas Red chili (with no beans!), a pot of pinto beans, and a pan of cornbread (not sweet!)

• read a murder mystery paperback, especially if it's an Ed McBain 87th precinct novel

• watch the "Chuckles the Clown" episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, "The Pie" episode of Seinfeld, or the "Hash" episode of Barney Miller and laugh hysterically

• go sit and talk with someone at a nursing home

• play a 4 person card game with your family

• listen to some Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Beatles Revolver album, or go see some live music

• play with a baby/toddler, and revel in their laughter

A party in Sandra's honor will be thrown on her birthday, October 10, 2021 at her daughter Leila's house. Please contact Zack or Leila for details.
