He was the second son of Gertrude Crosby (1836 Saugatuck, MI - ) and Dr. Sanford Fillmore Bennett (6/21/1836 Eden NY - ), who was Richmond's physician and a musician who wrote "In the Sweet By and By". His older brother was Edwin Richardson Bennett (b 7/30/1861 in Elkhorn, WI) and his sister was Mary Ruth Bennett (b 5/16/1869 Richmond, IL - ).
