Edward was born on Turkey Creek in Humphreys County, TN to Elijah and Martha Cotham Carter. He came to Lynn Grove, KY with his family and married first Lettie Stone. In late fall of 1912 they had one daughter, Lucille, and Lettie died 6 days later. Lucille followed her mother 18 days later.

Edward later married Idella Warren, daughter of Warren Dixon and Martha Jane Taylor Warren. They had 3 sons, James Elmo, Andy, and Clyde Ory.

Edward and Della spent the remainder of their lives in Lynn Grove, KY. Through the years he gradually lost his sight, but it never seemed to slow him down. Edward passed away at 96 years of age while visiting his son Clyde in Michigan.
