Annie Louise (High Horse) Red Elk

IN MEMORY OF
Annie Red Elk of Wanblee, South Dakota, died on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at her home in Wanblee at the age of 69.

Annie Louise Red Elk was born December 2, 1953, in Wanblee, South Dakota, the daughter of Alfred High Horse and Agnes (Between Lodges). She grew up in Wanblee and attended Holy Rosary Mission and Wanblee Day School. While in school, she met Roger Red Elk, a marriage that lasted 43 years until Roger's passing in 2010.

They made their home in Sand Creek, and later moved into Wanblee Housing, where she worked at the Arrow Factory in Wanblee, and worked security, and custodian at the Crazy Horse School for a number of years. Throughout all the years, she's always taken good care of her children and grandchildren.

Annie was very social and was seen at school at many events supporting her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed writing and sewing.

Survivors include six children Beverly Red Elk, Neil (Marilyn) Red Elk, Eric Red Elk, Melinda (Charlie) Wilcox, Roger Red Elk, Jr., and Conway Red Elk; 25 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one brother Jerome High Horse of Wanblee; Hunka Brother Bryant High Horse; a sister Bernadine Sitting Holy; Hunka Sisters: Anita Brown, Reva High Horse, Vina High Horse, Cherry High Horse, Elsie High Horse, and Cora and Sue Ann; three brother-in-laws Ernest Red Elk, Howard Red Elk and Calvin Red Elk.

In addition to her husband Roger; Annie was preceded in death by her daughter Sharon Red Elk Pebeahsy, son Waylon Red Elk, Sr.; two grandsons Waylon Red Elk, Jr. and Dallas Red Elk; her great-grandson Akicita Rogers; and her parents Alfred High Horse and Agnes (Between Lodges) High Horse.

A two-night wake service starts at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday January 14, 2023 at the TNT Center in Wanblee and will continue until the service time on Monday.

Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 16, 2023 at the TNT Center in Wanblee.

Burial will follow at Gethsemane Episcopal Church Cemetery in Wanblee.
