Daughter of Stephen N. Fellows and Rachel McGaffey.

Iowa City Press Citizen

Obituary. Mary Fellows Cavanagh was born near Dixon, Illinois, February 26, 1838. At the age of 16 she came to Cornell College, Mt. Vernon Iowa, in company with her brothers, Samuel M., first president of the newly founded institution, and Stephen N. Fellows, at that time professor at Cornell College, was afterwards for many years a member of the faculty of the State University of Iowa. At Cornell College, Miss Fellows completed her education, graduating in 1857, in the first class to graduate from that institution. The only other member of that class was Matthew Cavanagh of Iowa City.

Married In 1857
On September 16, 1857, just three months after graduation, the two classmates were quietly married in the college chapel at Mt. Vernon, and have spent all but two of their 67 years of wedded life here in Iowa City. To this marriage were born five children, all but one of whom survive. It is a testimony to the simple lives and sturdy stock of the progenitors that with five children, eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren, there should have been but one death, and that Mr. and Mrs. Cavanagh should have known no serious illness beyond the increasing infirmity of age.

Quiet Simple Life
Mrs. Cavanagh herself lived quietly and simply, but retaining to the end a keen interest in all matters of local or national importance, and a memory so unfailing that even in her last years she was able to supply important data for the historical records of the college with which she had been associated. Mrs. Cavanagh died very quietly on Thursday morning at the home of her daughter, Miss Lucy M. Cavanagh, 527 Reynolds, as briefly noted herein last evening. The funeral will be held from the home of Miss Cavanagh, Saturday afternoon at one thirty. Old friends of the family are invited to attend. The interment will be in the Iowa city cemetery, and will be private.
