Claire C. Bonner
August 18, 1935 - March 12, 2017
It is with deep sorrow that we share the peaceful passing of Claire Bonner. Claire was incredibly wise, a family man with a fantastic sense of humour and a gift for storytelling. Not a day went by that he did not bring laughter and a sense of inclusion to those around him.
Born in Winnipeg in 1935, he was the only child to Clifford and Ella Bonner.
Claire moved with his parents to Vancouver, BC in 1943, where he attended General Gordon elementary and graduated from Kitsilano High. He was a devoted friend to his classmates and treasured the opportunity to reunite with friends at his 60th high school reunion. Claire cherished the many friendships he made through sport, school, coaching, Gyro and social clubs. Claire was a gifted athlete who enjoyed competing in many sports including running, soccer, and squash, however, it was baseball and cycling that won his heart. At the age of 15, he worked as a telegraph courier, which was the foundation of his successful cycling career. His perseverance and dedication to the sport of cycling earned him a spot as a member of the Canadian National Cycling Team and the opportunity to represent Canada at the 1954 British Empire Games.
Claire attended UBC where he studied science and math for two years.
In 1961, Claire married his neighbourhood sweetheart, Colleen Meares, whom he adored and loved unconditionally for 55 years.
An offer of a millwright apprenticeship and the opportunity to play semi pro baseball led them to Port Alberni. It was here Colleen and Claire raised their 3 children, Lesley, Bradley and Allison, eventually moving to Prince George in 1982 for a job at Northwood Pulpmill. Claire's many new friends quickly learned that Claire loved to tease and play elaborate pranks. Claire loved his three children deeply and instilled in them the value of keeping active, spending quality time with friends and family, laughing, and above all, leading by example. Always one to finish what he started, Claire has selflessly donated his body to the UBC Medical program to assist student learning. His wisdom, indomitable spirit and strength of character will be greatly missed by his wife Colleen, his children Lesley (Dennis Schwab), Bradley, and Allison (Pierre Boileau), his grandchildren Makenna, Nolan, Brennen, Spencer, Bennett and many family and friends. Claire will be fondly remembered for his humble disposition, unwavering work ethic, his quick wit, and meticulous craftsmanship.
We would like to thank Dr. Fibich, Dr. Lamb, Dr. Grosse, Dr. Hagen, and Dr. Closson, Homecare team, and the thoughtful staff at Hospice House. We would also like to thank Lakewood Funeral home for their assistance in facilitating his last wish, which was to be transported to UBC.
A celebration of life will be held at the Signature Sandman May 6, 2017 at 2pm. We look forward to seeing you at the party.
