Services for James Carroll Cooper, 79, of Ada are 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 27, 2023 at Morris Memorial Baptist Church, Rev. Wayne Edgar and Rev. Jamie Perry will officiate. Burial will be at Redden Cemetery near Stringtown.

James was born January 11, 1944 at Atoka, Oklahoma to Jim and Hazel Cooper. He graduated from Stringtown High School in 1962. After graduation, he attended college at Wilburton, transferring after his freshman year to East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma. He received his master's degree in education from East Central University. He started his teaching career at Ada High School in 1966. In 1972, after teaching for several years, he left to begin a career as a Visual Service Counselor with the State of Oklahoma. He continued to work in the field of Vocational Rehabilitation until retirement in 2002. He was described as an effective mentor to other agency employees and a person who is committed to providing quality services to Oklahomans with disabilities.

James was an avid hunter. He always took his sons, grandsons and granddaughters hunting instilling a great love for the outdoors.

James became Scoutmaster of Troop 12 Ada, in 1977 and served in this capacity for over twenty years. In 1989 he was asked to serve as chairman of the district advancement committee and continued to serve in that capacity for another twenty years. He had the privilege of awarding the Eagle Scout honor to many young men from all the different troops in the Harry Miller District.

He married R. Kay Cockrill on May 29, 1965. They have three sons, James David, deceased, Steven Paul and wife Rhonda, and Jeremy Todd and wife Cindy Sue. James was blessed with twelve grandchildren, Jessica Wright, Clayton Cooper, Shane Delany, Tiffany Cooper, Deserea Cates, Tony Otto, Alexus Cooper, Harley Cooper, Ciara Cooper, Sean Corcoran, Nathan Cooper and Faith Cooper; eleven great grandchildren, Rori Wright, Kylie Wright, Cori Wright, Ayra Cooper, Oliver Cooper, Brailyn Alford, Tucker Cates, Jaiden Otto and Bentley Simmons; brother, John Darryl Cooper and wife Terri; and sister, Betty Howard.

Bearers are Josh Britt, Gerald Taylor, Nathan Cooper, Clayton Cooper, Tony Otto, and Sean Corcoran.
