A long time Chico resident, he went to be with his Savior on August 25, 2013 at the age of 104.
Herman was born February 24, 1909 in Hooker, Oklahoma to Sara and Dietrich Enns. He was the third of 14 children. The oldest of 7 boys, he grew up working on his father's wheat farm in the panhandle. In 1927 he graduated from the Mennonite Brethren Bible Academy of Corn, OK, the valedictorian of his class.
He trusted Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord as a teenager, a decision that set the course for the rest of his life. He was a life-long student of the Bible.
In 1933, Herman married Katie Penner of Corn, OK. They left Oklahoma during the dust bowl and moved to Capay Rancho where they established a dairy farm. Later he worked in Chico as a carpenter for Hignell and Strange.
After Katie died in 1969, Herman was introduced to Iris Washburn. They were married in 1971 in Chico. They enjoyed overseeing senior adult ministries and traveling during their 39 years together.
Iris preceded Herman in death in 2011. He is survived by a brother, Victor Enns of Reedley, a sister, Adina Waller of Salinas, four children, Erma (Tom) Kalb of Orland, Valina (Lowell) Ford of Kerby, Oregon, Gladys (Richard) Kelley of Yuba City, Gaylord (Patti) Enns of Chico, 8 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
