Jean Eva Peterson Read, 91, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2023 of natural causes at the home of her daughter in West Haven, Utah surrounded by her loving family.

Jean was born June 2, 1931 in Kanesville, Utah, a daughter of Wallace Lorenzo Peterson and Eva Green. She was the third of seven children, in a family of six girls and one boy. Jean was happy to share her birthday with her twin brother, John. These two were like "energizer bunnies." They never stopped working from the minute the sun came up in the morning until it went down in the evening. Being raised on a dairy farm she was taught the value of hard work and was always obedient and respectful of her parents. She loved her parents and siblings and had many fond childhood memories. They enjoyed being together throughout their lives.

Jean attended the one room schoolhouse in Kanesville, later Hooper Elementary, and Weber High School. She continued her education at Weber College graduating with an Associate of Science degree. Jean excelled in school, putting forth her very best effort in all that she did. She was a lifelong learner.

On February 1, 1951, Jean married her eternal companion, Ronald J. Read, in the Salt Lake Utah Temple. Together they raised four sons and one daughter. After the deaths of Ronald's parents, they welcomed into their home and family his 11-year-old brother, Dennis. They enjoyed being together as a family. Mom and Dad were a team, loving and supporting each other and their children. They taught them the Gospel of Jesus Christ by word and example.

Jean was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a sweet testimony and love of her Savior and found great joy in daily scripture study. Through the years she served faithfully in many ward and stake callings, where she gladly shared her talents and love of music as ward organist and pianist in each organization, with a special love for the Primary. Mom and Dad loved serving together as ordinance workers in the Ogden Utah Temple, having many choice spiritual experiences.

At a young age Jean joined the Daughters of Utah Pioneers, as a third generation member. lt was named the Ann Powell Peterson Camp, after her great grandmother. She was proud of her rich pioneer heritage. She has been a strong and faithful modern day pioneer, one her ancestors would be very proud of.

Some of her hobbies included playing the piano, reading good books, crocheting, oil painting, and gardening. She enjoyed learning and trying different kinds of crafts. Taught never to be idle, she took advantage of the long winter months to thoroughly clean her home. That way when spring finally arrived, she could go out and work in her yard and flower gardens, which was one of her great passions.

We are so grateful and feel so blessed to have had such a sweet and loving Mother. Her beautiful smile and sweet disposition made her such a joy to be with. To know Mom is to love her, and we do.

Surviving are her children, Dale (Joyce) Read, Brent (Brenda) Read, Marilyn (Joel) Tubbs, David (Jill) Read, C.J. (Sherrie) Read; 19 grandchildren and 56 great grandchildren; brother, John Peterson and sisters, Bessie Peterson and Cathryn Smith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Helen Ruth Peterson, Margaret Untersinger and Gayle Billings; her eternal sweetheart, Ronald J. Read; and granddaughter, Sarah Marie Read.

The family would like to express a special thanks to CNS Hospice nurses, doctor and staff for their support and sincere compassion towards Mom.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 23 at 11:00 am at the Kanesville Stake Center, 4555 West 4000 South, West Haven. Family and friends may call on Wednesday at Myers Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, Roy from 6 to 8 pm and on Thursday at the church from 9:15 to 10:45 am prior to services.
