Mrs. Withers died Saturday, September 9, 2000, at St. Joseph Hospital. She was 95.
Born December 30, 1904, to Ernst and Sarah (Slayton) Morgenthaler in the Goshen area, she was a lifetime Whatcom County resident and had lived in Everson and Deming before moving to Bellingham.
Mrs. Withers was a homemaker.
In June of 1923, she married Steve Withers in Bellingham.
Mrs. Withers retired as "floor lady" at produce canneries in Everson and Ferndale, where she worked the night shifts.
Mrs. Withers was a former member of Welcome Senior Center.
In the 1930s, she began fishing in county lakes, the Nooksack and Skagit rivers and remote Canadian lakes. She enjoyed camping in the county and in Canada and gathering shellfish at beaches. She loved flower and vegetable gardening and working in her yard.
She was known as the "Dahlia Lady" of Deming, raising about 300 dahlia0s annually. Her blooms were given to groups for church functions and social events. She also enjoyed crocheting and playing pinochle. In the 1930s and 1940s, she canned hundreds of jars of meat, vegetables, fruits and jams and jellies.
Her husband, infant sons Michael and Steve Jr., daughter Joy L. McCoy, three brothers and two sisters died previously.
Arrangements are by Whatcom Cremation and Burial of Ferndale.
