Alfred Vincent Angeloni, 86, of Magill Heights, West Deer, died at peace in his home, with loved ones at his side, on Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2007.
He was born May 7, 1921, in Culmerville to the late Daniele and Adalgisa (Nanni) Angeloni, lived in West Deer all of his life and was a member of Transfiguration Roman Catholic Church, Russellton.
Alfred was a 1939 honor graduate of Tarentum High School; attended Fenn College, Cleveland; graduated with an engineering degree from Ohio University in 1943, and retired in 1981 as a senior lab technician from the former Gulf Research, Harmar, with 36 years of service.
He was a World War II Army veteran who served in the China-Burma-India area during the Chinese and Burma offensive and attained the rank of sergeant. Alfred was attached to the Army Air Forces units in the Luliang and Kunming airfields as a photo intelligence analyst and received numerous citations, including two Bronze Stars. He himself never would own a personal firearm of any kind but was an ardent proponent of responsible civilian respect of arms and marksmanship. For many summers, he was an administrative adviser and umpire at the National Rifle Association encampments and training at Camp Perry, Ohio, and was named to the standby list for officials at World Olympics competitions. In 2002, Alfred was awarded the NRA Meritorious Service Medal. He was a founder and organizer of the original West Deer Fire Department No. 1, Culmerville, serving several years as secretary and president. He was a favorite friend of many at the West Deer Senior Center, where he was named 2004 Volunteer of the Year, and was a member of his local polling center staff during elections. Alfred is remembered affectionately for being the toastmaster, with a comedic flair, at many retirement and service group functions. His talent in making people laugh and enjoy themselves earned him a Toastmasters extraordinaire award during a national session in Cleveland. He particularly relished palling with his brother on European trips to their parents' native village in Italy; chumming with local friend Tom McCarthy and his buddies who meet each morning for breakfast coffee at Tom's Sisters' Corner Deli, West Deer, and the camaraderie of the pals at the lunch counter at Palmer Drug Store, Russellton.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Julia (Hromika) Angeloni; daughter, Gloria (Ronald) Mialky, of West Deer; son, Leon Angeloni, of Springdale Borough; grandchildren, Eric (Kelly) and Angela Mialky and Julie Angeloni; great-granddaughters, Anna, Clare and Emma Mialky; brother, Daniel (the late Mable) Angeloni, of West Deer, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the SIWICKI-YANICKO FUNERAL HOME, 23 McKrell Road, Russellton, West Deer, where services will be at 11 a.m. Friday with his pastor, the Rev. John Vojtek, officiating.
Burial will be in Our Lady of Hope Cemetery, Frazer.
