Evelyn E. Axtell, 88, died on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born on Feb. 12, 1920 in Broken Bow, Neb. to Richard and Catherine Anna (Thomas) Scharnow, the second of five children.

Her younger years were spent in the sand hills of Nebraska, where the family helped neighboring farmers and ranchers. While they lived in the sand hills, schools were hard to find. Her education began in a small house, the teacher being the farmer's wife. Fern and Evelyn were the only students that year. The following year a schoolhouse was moved closer to where they lived, which brought more kids to the school. Still much of the time it was just Evelyn and Fern who attended the school.

Later in her young life the family moved to Goodland with hopes of finding help for her sister, Frances, who was disabled.

Around 1930 the family moved to the Rago community where Evelyn attended Clay Center School. When school got out she went to live with the teacher in Greeley.

Her senior year the family moved to the Anton area, but she wasn't able to get her credits for graduation. She moved back to Akron so she could finish her education. She lived with Viola and Vivian Resler whom she took care of for room and board. Ivis Resler taught her how to drive and helped her get her driver's license.

Evelyn led an interesting life. She herded turkeys, worked for the NYA in high school, was a family helper for many local families and was even a teacher and a restaurant worker.

She married Manley Axtell Aug. 9, 1941 in St. Francis, Kan. To this union were born three sons, Richard (Dick), David and Gary. They raised their family in Akron. After her mother died, she was the caregiver for her father and her sister, Frances, until her sister went into the nursing home.

Her home was always open to her nieces and nephews, who enjoyed going there for fair preparations.

Evelyn enjoyed watching the parades and especially enjoyed the marching bands. She loved animals and working in her yard with the flowers. She could be found every weekend attending garage sales.

She moved to Worland in July of 2006 to be near family where she became of resident at the Worland Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, where she lived until the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, Floyd and Dale, one sister, Frances, brother-in-law, Archie Davisson and one great-grandson, Izik.

She is survived by three sons, Richard Axtell of Buffalo, Dave (Linda) Axtell of Worland and Gary (Sandy) Axtell of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one sister, Fern Davisson of Akron; nine grandchildren; great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held at the Akron Cemetery, in Akron, Colo.
