Death Takes Mrs. Mary E. Cole, Member of Pioneer Cram Family
Months of failing health ended in death yesterday for Mrs. Mary E. Cole, 70-yr.-old native of East Highlands, pioneer resident of the Mission district, and widow of J. M. Cole, veteran citrus grower.
Mrs. Cole died at her Redlands home, 561 Crescent avenue, to which she had Mr. Cole moved from the Mission district ranch in 1934. Mr. Cole died May 11, 1938.
Born in East Highland on Oct. 20, 1870, Mrs. Cole was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Cram, whose orange grove was one of the district's first commercial citrus plantings. Her father had come from Illinois to the San Bernardino valley in 1852, traveling over the old Santa Fe trail to Fort Yuma and thence across the desert to San Diego. For several years he manufactured furniture at the old San Bernardino Asistencia of the Mission San Gabriel before moving to East Highlands.
Five brothers of Mrs. Cole survive. They are: Will, Edward and Robert Cram, East Highlands; Frank Cram, Highland and James E. Cram, Greenspot.
Her son, Dr. Frank R. Cole, residing at 925 West Highland avenue, is a member of the Redlands board of education and a prominent entomologist and citrus grower. Her daughter, Mrs. Florence L. Lloyd, of Berkeley, has been in Redlands during the last week.
There are also five grandchildren.
Long a member of the First Congregational church of Redlands, Mrs. Cole has been prominent in the Contemporary club.
F. Arthur Cortner is is charge of funeral arrangements.

Highland shares in sorrow over the passing of Mrs. Mary E. Cole of Redlands, only sister of Frank L. Cram of this place and W. H. Cram, Edward and Robert Cram of east Highlands and James E. Cram of Greenspot. Mrs. Cole was the only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Cram who were the early pioneer citizens of this locality. She was born in East Highlands and was married to Joseph M. Cole of Mission at the family home which still stands on East Third street, East Highlands.
INVALID FOR ONE YEAR
The marriage of Mr. Cole and Miss Cram united two of the most prominent families in the San Bernardino valley. Mr. Cole passed away in May, 1938. Mrs. Cole would have been 80 years of age had she lived until next Sunday.
She had been an invalid for many years. Mrs. Cole leaves two children, Dr. Frank Cole of Redlands and Mrs. Francis Lloyd of Berkeley. Mrs. Cole had long been a member of the Redlands congregational church and the funeral service will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, at 2 o'clock in that church, with her pastor, the Rev. Herbert C. Ide, officiating. Interment will be in Hillside cemetery beside her husband.
