Brigadier Hugh James Archdale was born on 15 January 1854 to Captain Mervyn Edward Archdale. He graduated from Cheltenham College and entered the British Indian Army where he had a distinguished career.

MILITARY CAREER (1875-1911)

1875-1877- Hugh James entered the British Army as " Ensign" in 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
1877-1885- Promoted to " Lieutenant" in 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

1885-1892- Served as " Captain" of 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Here at Bengal he married Minnie Archdale. Minnie died in 1888 and was buried in Bandariabagh Cemetery, Lucknow. Hugh served in Burma and Soudan

1892-1900- Served as " Major" of 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers. In 1894, Hugh married for second time to Helen Trevor.

1900-1904- Served as" Lieutenant Colonel" of 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

1904-1907- Promoted to " Colonel" of 1st Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

1907-1911- Promoted to " Brigadier". In 1911, Hugh retired from British Army. He died on 31 August 1921.
