John resided in Stokes County, N.C. when he enlisted at age 33 on March 13th 1862 as a private in the Confederate Army. He was promoted to Corporal on Dec 1st 1864.
He was captured at Sutherland Station, VA. on April 2nd 1865.
He was confined at Point Lookout Prison in St. Marys County, Maryland on April 4th 1865. (this prison was on a sand bar and the shelters were only tents.)
John was released at same on June 29th 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.

The children that I know of are:
1. George Washington Landreth
2. Anna Eliza Landreth who was a Cherokee Indian that they adopted.
Her name was originally Analiga Moody. (Did they adopt her from Oklahoma, and do you know the circumstances?)

Anne Eliza married Meredith S. Freeman.
3. Robert E. "Lee" Landreth
4. Ellen Landreth married John Parrish
5. Mary Alice Landreth
6. Peter Goode Landreth
7. Charlotte Landreth

I also read on GenForum that John and Nellie had 6 boys that died before the age of 8 from tuberculosis.
