AMES F. "Rip" "Jack" JOHNSON, 81, of Memphis, passed away at home surrounded by his family September 12, 2007. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a Seaman 1st Class on the USS North Carolina. He was raised in Crenshaw, MS and relocated to Memphis, TN where he met and married Janice (Jan) Richard, his wife of 58 years. Rip joined the Memphis Fire Department January 2, 1956. He progressed through the ranks and retired April 1, 1991 as a Division Chief. In spite of a lengthy and debilitating illness, Rip never misplaced his remarkable sense of humor. Ever the storyteller, he could weave a tapestry of life experiences into delightful tales that left everyone holding their sides from laughter. Until his last few years, Rip was also ingreat demand on the dance floor--boogie woogie or ballroom--he was always in rare form. He is survived by his wife, Jan Johnson; daughter, Dynelle Johnson of Maysville, Georgia; daughter and son-in-law Becky and Lee Smith of Oakland, TN; two grandsons and their wives Patrick and Christina Smith of Southaven, MS, and David and Robin Smith of Memphis, as well as a host of friends that will miss him greatly. He was a member of Raleigh Assembly of God. He will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father and faithful friend. Service to celebrate and give thanks to God for his life will be at Forest Hill Funeral Home East on Whitten Road, at 12 p.m., Saturday, September 15, with visitation, 5-7 p.m., Friday.
