SQUIRE SAMUEL S. CRAWFORD was born July 28, 1848, in the southern part of Monroe County, Ky., where he grew to manhood, and has always resided. His father, James Crawford, Jr., also a native of Monroe County, was born in 1808, and is now living. He is the son of James Crawford, Sr., who was born in Wythe County, Va.; was a pioneer of Monroe County, Ky., where he died in 1864, at the age of eighty-six years. His father, William Crawford, was a native of Ireland. James Crawford, Jr., married Jane, daughter of John Pinckley, of Monroe County (born 1816), and their offspring were ten sons and one daughter, two of whom, our subject and James Bishop Crawford, are now living. Squire Crawford obtained a common English education at the schools of his vicinity. He married, January 14, 1869, Arabelle Lankford, of Monroe County (born 1851), and to them have been born Bertie O., Willie (deceased), Mary C., Laura, Stella, Annie and Bettie. Squire Crawford was elected magistrate and member of the court of claims of Monroe County, in 1881, to fill a vacancy, and in 1883 he was again elected for a full term, and now fills that position. He is a blacksmith, and has met with encouraging success in his business in Gamaliel. In 1884 he nailed 3,837 shoes on horses. He is a member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Republican. His father has for more than thirty years been a deacon in the Christian Church.
