Joseph was born to Alfred and Birdie Martin on September 14, 1932 in Darnell, Louisiana. He was the second born to Alfred and Birdie. Joseph was born severely premature weighing around 3 pounds. They kept him in a shoe box and kept Joseph alive with "cat nip tea."

Joseph was a lifelong member of Corbin Ferry Freewill Baptist Church. He graduated from Lake Providence High School in 1952. He married Lillie Louise Frith on December 11, 1954. After graduation Joseph worked for a short time at the International Paper Mill in Bastrop, La. He quickly came back and began to farm. The first year he farmed was very difficult, but he made it. He continued to farm for many years and worked at the gin in the fall to make ends meet. In the beginning he farmed mostly cotton and soybeans. Later on, he and Wayne and Ed formed Joe Martin and Sons. He and his sons' farmed for many years together. Joseph retired in 1994 after 40 years of farming. He continued to offer an occasional opinion to Wayne and Ed on the farm, and was willing to lend a helping hand in case they were not doing it just right.

Even while farming Joseph had many hobbies. He spent many nights fox hunting. The winters allowed him to enjoy deer hunting, and after retirement he spent many days fishing. Joseph always had a garden, but in retirement he took extra special care of his garden, and especially his tomatoes.

Joseph was a firm believer in hard work. He instilled that lesson into his sons, as well. Joseph worked hard for all of his life, and it was important to him to leave the legacy to his family that working hard is one of the most important components of this life.
