"Catherine McCree Barthwell, age 88, a Detroit librarian for 43 years a lover of literature died on Friday, November 18, 2011 in Brookfield, Illinois. Mrs. Barthwell, a native of Des Moines, Iowa, was educated in the public schools of Boston, Massachusetts and Fisk University at Nashville, Tennessee, and Simmons College, in Boston. She initially worked as a librarian in the Detroit Public Library System and later in the Detroit Public Schools, retiring in 1988. Mrs. Barthwell was married in 1947 to Jack C. Barthwell, Jr. a Detroit pharmacist, and was the mother of two sons Jack III, a Detroit attorney and businessman, and David, a Chicago psychiatrist. She is survived by her son, David (Andrea); three grandsons, David, Jack IV and Matthew; two granddaughters, Tiffany and Alison; a daughter-in-law, Genet; and a brother, James (Suesetta). Mrs. Barthwell was an active member of Christ Church-Detroit, Episcopal where a memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2011, preceded by a family hour at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Fisk University, Nashville, Tennessee 37208."
