Charles, of Rayburn Country, passed away on Sunday at Harbor Hospital.

As a young man living in Nederland, Texas, he was involved in Scouting. He was proudly awarded his Eagle Scout Badge from Admiral Richard E. Byrd. Later he became an active scout master for many years guiding his scouts through the Fhilmont Scout Camp in New Mexico.

He graduated from Nederland High School in 1938. He studied engineering for two years at Lamar College in Beaumont, Texas where he met Clare M. Heiselbetz.

Charles graduated from Texas A&M University in the class of '43 as a mechanical engineer. After graduation he worked for General Electric designing and building special turbines to be used on aircraft carriers during WWII.

In 1944 he joined the Navy and served as Lieutenant Junior Grade, an executive officer aboard a ship that patrolled the Atlantic and the Caribbean Sea for enemy submarines.

After WWII, he was employed by Gulf Oil Corporation in Port Arthur, Texas where he worked for thirty seven years, as Director of Utilities, Gas, and Heavy Chemicals. In 1967 Charles served as Manager of The Gulf Oil Refinery in Purvis, Mississippi near Hattiesburg.

He was a registered Texas Professional Engineer represented the Gulf Oil Corporation in Washington, DC. He was a member of the American Petroleum Institute and established the Sabine Chapter of American Society of Mechanical Engineers where he served as president for many years in Port Arthur.

In 1982 he retired from Gulf Oil and moved with Clare to their dream home at Lake Sam Rayburn. He and Clare wanted to share their good fortune and love for Texas A & M University by creating an Endowment Scholarship fund in Mechanical Engineering to provide aid and encouragement for leaders of the future.

Charlie was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Port Arthur where he and Clare taught Sunday School for many years. After their retirement they joined the Lake Rayburn United Methodist Church where they made many wonderful friends. He helped establish their neighborhood homeowners association and served as president for many years. He also helped establish the Lake Rayburn Volunteer Fire Department.
