Samuel Leavitt was an early colonial settler of Exeter, New Hampshire, one of the four original towns in the colony of New Hampshire. Exeter is located about 55 miles north of Boston. Samuel was a Lieutenant in the New Hampshire Militia and would also become a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives.

Samuel was the son of Deacon John Leavitt and Mary Lovitt of Hingham, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Samuel was born in April 1641 in Hingham, Massachusetts which is between Boston and Plymouth Rock. Hingham is about 15 miles SE of Boston and about 25 miles NW of Plymouth Rock, MA.

Samuel first appeared in Exeter in 1664, where he was granted 15 acres of land by the town. In 1667, he bought a home and barn and 7 more acres of land from his father-in-law John Robinson. Over the years, he would increase his ownership of much acreage around the city of Exeter.

Samuel married Mary Robinson (daughter of John Robinson, an early settler of Ipswich, Massachusetts and of Exeter, NH). Mary and Samuel had 10-11 children: John (1665-1707), Mary (1667-1750), Elizabeth (1668-1754), Hannah (1669-1697), Samuel Jr (1671-1753), James (1672-1733), Jeremy Benjamin (1673-1733), Ephraim (1680-1734), Daniel (1681-1734) and Sarah Ann (1685-1740).

Lt. Samuel Leavitt died on August 6, 1707, at the age of 66, and was buried in Exeter. Samuel may have been buried on the grounds of the Congregational Church or in the Second Public Cemetery in Exeter.
