Daughter of John Dow and Mary Shaw on the death record, another record gives father as Shaw and mother as Dow on her marriage record in 1880 when presumably she would have given the information. The parents were born in New Hampton. Her father was a minister.

She first married Richard Appleyard in 1864. He was born in Halifax England about 1838 and was a dyer in the mill at Lowell Massachusetts. They were living in Lowell in the 1865 State Census and did not yet have children when the census was taken.

Eliza and Richard Appleyard had children:
Alice Eliza born July 10, 1865 in Lowell
Alfred H. born September 27, 1871 Lowell

In the 1870 census in Lowell Richard was working in the hosiery mill age 32. Eliza was 27 and Alice was age 5 and at school.

Richard Appleyard died before 1880 when Eliza is found in the census residing in Ashland New Hampshire age 36. She has her two children, Alice and Alfred with her and a boarder DeWitt Merrill then age 38 whom she married later that year. He was a shoeworker.

She married DeWitt C. Merrill n Plymouth New Hampshire on December 14, 1880. It was a second marriage for both. Eliza had been born in Thornton the daughter of Reverend Shaw and Mary K. Dow. DeWitt and Eliza were both residing in Ashland at the time of the marriage and he was a shoemaker.

DeWitt was the son of Noah Merrill and Melinda Tibbetts, he born Northfield and she in Manchester or vice versa.

She died at age 77, 1 month and 23 days at her home in Ashland on Mill Street from old age and was buried Green Grove Cemetery in Merrill lot on March 21, EG Gammons, undertaker. She had resided in Ashland for 49 years and was born Thornton New Hampshire. (Death record indicates died March of 1921 yet when her daughter got married in October of 1921 she was living. Perhaps it was died March 1922 and a mistake on the record.)

Daughter Alice E. Appleyard married John F. Lord in 1885 and Bradley H. Smith in 1921 and was also buried here.

Son Alfred H. Appleyard married Clara R. Huckins in 1933.
