A son of Ralph Shelton and Margaret Clere, John Shelton was the 21st Lord of Shelton Manor. Knighted 1509, he was present as Knight of the Bath at coronation of Henry VIII. He was high sheriff of Norfolk in 1504. He married, c. 1497, Anne Boleyn (1475-1556, daughter of Sir William Boleyn, and Margaret Butler), and aunt of the ill fated second wife of Henry VIII. Sir John and Lady Anne Boleyn Shelton had ten children. Per "The Sheltons" by Z.F. Shelton, published 1962, Page 9. Sir John married Lady Ann Boleyn, aunt of Queen Ann Boleyn, governess to Princess Mary, later Queen Mary. When Princess Elizabeth was so persecuted during her sister's (Queen Mary's) reign she fled to Sir John and Lady Shelton for protection. She was later secreted in the tower of Shelton Church when Sir John's mansion was not sufficient protection. When Elizabeth was crowned she summoned Sir John's family to her palace where his descendants lived during her reign. (Note: John Shelton died in 1539, many years before Queen Mary came to the throne in 1553, and Elizabeth became Queen in 1558.)

John Shelton's father, Sir Ralph Shelton built St. Mary's Church, Shelton, and John had the east window decorated with stained glass portraits of his parents, himself, and his wife, kneeling in prayer. Beautiful photographs of the church can be found at:
